I'm Teaching Again
A couple of weeks ago, I got a phone call from Miss D., who has been teaching most of Thomas' Rec. Center classes for the last four years. She had accidentally been double-booked this summer, and wondered if I would teach the Safe Summer class that's held in June. I told her I would.
It's a pretty easy gig, I guess. There are only four, one hour, classes and there are scheduled speakers for each class. The kids ages range from 3 to 6, but there are only 8 kids (with Thomas).
The first class was about fire safety and a fireman with truck was supposed to show (he didn't--lunchtime!--so I st-re-tch-ed my plans). I was easily able to find lots of things for my lesson plan and the kids had a blast singing and practicing Stop, Drop and Roll. My Fire Safety lesson plan is here.
The second class was about personal safety and a police officer with car did show up. She spent, actually, more time than I had planned, so this time I had to shrink my lesson plan. That's okay, planning-wise, but it meant that the Stranger Danger and Good Touch/Bad Touch got short shrift. I had a VERY difficult time finding anything of any use online. My Personal Safety lesson plan is here.
As an aside, isn't it funny how little kids will always tell on their parents? The police officer began talking about always buckling up and asked if the kids did. They all said yes, but then one boy raised his hand and asked, "Is it all right if your Mom says to lay down in the front seat of the car because the back seat's full of clothes?" LOL
After class on Friday, Miss D., who has taught this class for years, seemed to be angling for my lesson plans. Finally, she just offered to let me take the class in July, too. Hmmm. I don't know. While I hate to turn down money, little kids make me tired! LOL! I'll probably do it, though. (Update: I have told her yes.)
The third class will be about outdoor safety and the speaker will be either from Animal Control or a Therapy Dog organization to talk about safety around animals. Other than that, I do not have my lesson plan set up yet. I expect to be able to find more resources online this time. Update: my Outdoor Safety lesson plan is here.
The fourth class will be about water safety and we'll have a lifeguard to speak to us. Again, I do not have my lesson plan for this yet, but hope to find a good number of resources. Update: my Water Safety & Wrap-Up lesson plan is here.
Note: This post is being re-posted so I could include the updates and complete lesson plan links. Sorry if you've seen this twice and don't care!
Additional Update: I have now finished all four classes. A couple of thoughts--having someone come in to speak is better than nothing and the only thing that fits this particular situation. But a class or family situation that could make field trips would be really ideal!
A personal thought--this classroom situation really affirms my desire to homeschool. Thomas is quite distractable in a classroom situation. I don't even like to think what that would mean for him in public school. Aside: why does the ability to sit still all day have such value?
