FAIR: Storm in the Night

I picked up Five in a Row and am using it as inspiration for some literature-based unit studies. The first book we read was Storm in the Night. Thomas had a previously scheduled weather-related field trip, so I timed the book around the field trip.

I added some extension activities to the FIAR activities. First, we practiced weather and season terms in Spanish. Second, because the story deals with a grandfather telling a story about a pet to his grandson, I had Thomas write to his grandfathers asking about a childhood pet. (I typed out a model letter and then had Thomas copy it, for handwriting practice.) I asked his grandfathers to write back in simple printing and so Thomas was able to read their letters back to him. Then, I had Thomas write thank you letters to his grandfathers. (We used email this time, with me helping with letter format but not spelling.)

Along with the field trip, which I blogged about here, this was a great unit study.
