Book Review: Learning At Home: A Mother's Guide to Homeschooling, Revised
Marty Layne says yeah, ya' gotta have patience to homeschool--but that can be developed, just like any other skill. What is much more important is that you must genuinely like to be with your children--they must be your favorite people to be with. (That doesn't preclude the need for time apart occasionally!)
Marty begins the book by trying to help you answer the question of whether or not you can homeschool. Then she moves on to creating a learning-enriched home environment and how to teach reading, writing, math, etc. She addresses the issue of burnout and then goes on to what happens after homeschooling.
This book is not written from a Christian perspective, as so many are. Her religious views can not be deduced from her writing here, so that this book may serve its purpose for homeschoolers of any or no faith.
This book is written from the perspective of an unschooler. Her children have done very well, but it floored me to read how old they were before they started to read. Maybe it is the public school influence that is still present in me, but I am just not comfortable with THAT much patience!
